The ancient necropolis of Skillountia was excavated in 1971. It lies next to the modern by-pass of Skillountia, the road connecting Krestena and Mazi, probably also the location of an ancient road. The site is fenced but freely accessible. The walled necropolis, dated to the 4th century BC, contains 15 tombs, roughly grouped in four funerary precincts. Large funerary pithoi were found as well as cists tombs and shaft graves oriented in a North-South direction, the head of the dead lying towards the South. A number of funerary gifts have been recovered, among them a statuette of Nike. |
